Five M3 generations, ranked for TUNERS

From the E30 origin to the G80 era, ordered by the cars we want to spend time around.

How we ranked them

A five-generation editorial selection, not a complete chronology. Current scene fit comes first, followed by engine character and visual identity. The E36 is outside this shortlist, not missing from M3 history.

The order reflects TUNERS’ editorial judgment. Sources below support model facts and development history; they do not endorse the ranking.

  1. BMW M3 (G80)

    The present-day lead

The G80 wins this particular list because it is the strongest bridge to the modern TUNERS brief. The broad sedan body gives contemporary builds a recognizable center, while its drivetrain choices allow different owners to take different directions.

  2. BMW M3 (E46)

    The enduring shape

The E46 is second for its cohesive design and straight-six character. We would put a beautifully finished E46 next to a new M car without trying to modernize away the details that make it recognizable.

  3. BMW M3 (F80)

    The turbo-era turning point

The F80 puts the turbocharged sedan chapter in the top three. It offers a sharper, quieter visual alternative to the G80, which makes it an appealing canvas for owners who prefer restrained bodywork and a deliberate stance.

  4. BMW M3 (E92)

    The one with the V8

The E92 ranks fourth for the contrast it brings to an M-focused garage. Its engine gives a build an immediate theme; our preference would be to refine the surrounding car without diluting that central feature.

  5. BMW M3 (E30)

    The origin, treated with respect

The E30 completes the selection for its touring-car roots and unmistakable body. We would give its history room to show through. Its place here reflects the site’s modern emphasis, not a judgment against its importance.
