The original M3 existed because BMW needed a road car to homologate a touring car, and it shows in the flared arches, the boxed-in rear glass and the four-cylinder S14 built to rev. Its Group A and DTM record is the foundation of the M3 name, rather than anything about the road car's outright pace. Fewer than eighteen thousand were built.
