CS and CSL: five we would put in the garage
M4 CSL, M2 CS, M3 CS and the special editions with a distinct point of view.

How we ranked them
An editorial order based on how clearly each version expresses its purpose. Exclusivity and horsepower alone do not determine the result; these are factory configurations, not tuned comparisons.
The order reflects TUNERS’ editorial judgment. Sources below support model facts and development history; they do not endorse the ranking.
BMW M4 CSL (G82)
The clearest statement of intent
The two-seat, rear-drive CSL takes first because its compromises are part of its identity. The carbon details and reduced-weight brief feel like one complete idea, making it our reference for a focused modern M special.
BMW M2 CS (G87)
The newest compact CS chapter
The G87 CS brings an automatic-only, rear-drive configuration to a body with serious visual weight. We like its place between compact coupe and factory statement car; it should not be confused with the manual-capable F87 CS.
BMW M3 CS (G80, 2024 US model)
Four doors, CS intent
This M3 CS combines an automatic transmission and M xDrive with the four-door body. It ranks highly because the special-edition treatment still leaves a recognizable sedan, rather than sacrificing the M3 silhouette to make its point.
BMW M4 CS (G82)
The more versatile special coupe
Four seats and M xDrive distinguish the CS from the CSL. We place it here for anyone attracted to the special-edition detail but who wants a broader-use coupe, with the transmission and traction choices made at the factory.
BMW M2 CS (F87)
The compact original
The earlier M2 CS earns its place through compact proportions and the availability of a manual gearbox. Its appeal is a different interpretation of CS, not an attempt to beat the G87 on a specification sheet.
