The F80 is where BMW split the names: the M3 badge went to the saloon only, and the two-door became the M4. It was also the first turbocharged M3, using the S55, and the shift in engine character away from the naturally aspirated S54 was the main thing owners and reviewers argued about at launch. The extra torque and an available manual gearbox made it a straightforward daily-drivable performance car, and the aftermarket found the S55 responds well to tuning.
