Our ideal G87 feature starts at wheel height. Show the tire, the clearance, the brake and the shape of the arch. Then pull back and let the rest of the car explain itself. This is a platform that suits a purposeful, slightly confrontational look, with enough detail to reward somebody who knows what they are looking at.

The appeal for a modern tuner build is the opportunity to choose an identity early. A clean street coupe, a documented track project and a show-focused car can start in the same place and end somewhere very different.

Start with a dated specification

For US model year 2025, BMW lists the G87 M2 at 473 hp with rear-wheel drive and a choice of six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. Torque differs: 406 lb-ft for the manual and 443 lb-ft for the automatic. It has four seats and standard 19-inch front, 20-inch rear wheels. BMW's 2025 M2 release.

The model-year label belongs in the conversation. Do not automatically attach those numbers to an earlier car, a special edition or a different market. Ask for the build information, fitted equipment and modification history when comparing cars or ordering parts.

The 2027 xDrive changes the choice

BMW announced the 2027 M2 xDrive in June 2026, with market launch scheduled for late summer 2026. The US specification lists 473 hp and an eight-speed automatic with all-wheel drive. It gives a G87 buyer another configuration to consider alongside earlier rear-drive cars. BMW’s M2 xDrive announcement.

Check the actual car’s drivetrain and model year before reusing a fitment list. A parts package documented on a rear-drive M2 is not, by itself, evidence that the same package fits the xDrive version.

Choose what the car is for

A street build should begin with the routes and routines it will actually see: parking ramps, road surfaces, passengers and the weather you intend to drive in. Those constraints are useful. They turn an endless parts catalog into a manageable brief.

A track project needs a different notebook. Record event requirements, service checks, tire condition, brake observations and driver feedback. If the aim is improvement, a useful first purchase may be instruction and preparation rather than a more dramatic exterior.

A show build can put finish, proportion and detail at the center. The standard of execution still matters: attachment points, wiring, panel alignment and access for servicing are all part of a complete car. Make the close-up as convincing as the wide shot.

The wheel is only one part of fitment

Collect wheel diameter, width and offset alongside the exact tire model and size. Add the suspension configuration and brake package. Send that information to the wheel supplier and installer before approving an order.

Ask for a check with the car loaded and the steering moved through its range. Leave a record of any adjustments that make the package work. If a photograph becomes somebody else's reference, the supporting information should be as good as the photograph.

For the visual direction, we would begin with a strong wheel design and one supporting body treatment. Let the factory form do some of the work. A cohesive car makes a clearer impression than a build in which every panel introduces another material or color.

Keep the project readable

Build in chapters. Establish the mechanical baseline, settle the wheels and suspension, then decide whether the power delivery needs changing for your intended use. Keep the original parts when practical and photograph each stage.

Write down the reason for every major purchase. “Needed more clearance at the front” is useful. “Everybody buys these” is a weaker starting point. A clear reason also gives you a way to judge whether the change succeeded.

The best G87 coverage should include the owner and the workshop, not only a list of components. Who aligned it? What changed after the first event? Which part was removed because it made the car less enjoyable? That is the material that makes another builder stop scrolling.

Give the M2 an identity you can explain. The result can be loud, subtle, immaculate or visibly used. What matters is that its choices belong to the same car.
