CS and CSL attract the same conversation at a meet: how much carbon, how many were made, how much power. Those are useful questions, but they miss the biggest distinction. These cars do not all make the same choices about drivetrain, transmission or everyday use.
Start with the generation and model year. An M2 CS from an earlier generation and a G87 M2 CS are different cars. Even “G80 M3 CS” now needs more detail because BMW has announced a manual, rear-drive Handschalter version for US model year 2027.
The useful comparison
These are BMW's US specifications for the stated model years. Power figures are manufacturer engine ratings, not wheel-horsepower measurements.
| Model | US model year | Power | Transmission | Driven wheels |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| G80 M3 CS | 2024 | 543 hp | Eight-speed automatic | M xDrive |
| G82 M4 CS | 2025 | 543 hp | Eight-speed automatic | M xDrive |
| G82 M4 CSL | 2023 | 543 hp | Eight-speed automatic | Rear |
| G87 M2 CS | 2026 | 523 hp | Eight-speed automatic | Rear |
| G80 M3 CS Handschalter | 2027, announced | 473 hp | Six-speed manual | Rear |

The M3 CS and M4 CS are complete packages
The original G80 CS builds on the M3 Competition with M xDrive. BMW pairs its power increase with specific chassis settings and lightweight components. The G82 M4 CS follows a similar idea in a four-seat coupe. Treat that integration as part of what the badge describes. M3 CS engineering, M4 CS engineering.
For an owner planning modifications, our advice is to establish what the factory package feels like before replacing it. Save its alignment information, identify the fitted tires and keep original components. A successful change should solve an observed problem or serve a clear purpose.
The CSL makes a different commitment
The M4 CSL removes the rear seats and uses track-oriented front full bucket seats. BMW announced a 240-pound reduction against the contemporary M4 Competition and a global production run of 1,000. Its rear-wheel-drive layout also separates it from the M4 CS. BMW's M4 CSL release.
That makes rear-seat use an immediate decision, before the discussion reaches lap times or collector appeal. Sit in the actual seats, understand the fitted equipment and think about how often the car will do the journeys you normally make. A more specialized car only makes sense when its specialization is useful or desirable to you.
Do not transfer the CSL's 1,000-car production figure to every model with CS lettering. A model described as limited production needs its own documented number before a listing should quote one.
Compare the ownership brief
Our editorial comparison begins with five questions: Do you need rear doors? Do you use the back seats? Is a manual essential? Will the car visit a circuit? How much of its existing character do you intend to change?
If the plan already replaces suspension, wheels, seats and much of the exterior, write out that plan beside the special edition's equipment. That does not make modifying a CS wrong. It helps reveal whether the factory package is central to your project or incidental to it.
Keep factory specification, seller claims and your own impressions separate when assessing an individual car. The badge gets the conversation started; the configuration and condition should determine where it goes.
Specification comparison and TUNERS editorial analysis, not a comparative road test. The 2027 Handschalter is covered as an announced model; dealer stock and delivery status are not asserted.
