A naked bike is a sportbike with the bodywork stripped away and the rider sat more upright, and the BMW S 1000 R stays about as close to its superbike source as the genre gets. BMW says its inline-four is still based on the S 1000 RR's engine and delivers a linear, full torque curve. BMW Motorrad USA's 2025 press kit The 2025 update brought more power, a quicker throttle and smarter electronics, and the 2027 bike carries that package over almost untouched. Here is what you get, what the packages add, and when the M 1000 R is worth the extra money.
Superbike engine, street tune
The 999cc four makes 170 hp at 11,000 rpm in BMW's US rating, 5 hp more than before, thanks to reshaped intake ports and revised mapping. Torque is unchanged at 84 lb-ft at 9,250 rpm. BMW lists the bike at 438.7 lb ready to ride, with 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds and a top speed beyond 155 mph. BMW Motorrad USA In Europe, BMW quotes the same engine at 125 kW (170 PS). BMW's global release
Set that against the S 1000 RR in the same US tables: 205 hp, with its 83 lb-ft peak arriving at 11,000 rpm. BMW Motorrad USA The R gives up 35 hp at the top for a torque peak that is a touch higher and lands 1,750 rpm sooner. Less scream, more shove. On a road, where the redline rarely comes into play, that is the right trade.
What changed for 2025
BMW fitted a shorter final drive, with 17/46 sprockets, for harder acceleration. It also reworked the shift assistant so clutchless upshifts are smooth with the throttle closed and downshifts are smooth with it open. BMW Motorrad USA The new M Quick Action Throttle cuts grip rotation from 72 to 58 degrees, so full throttle takes less wrist. Rider Magazine
MSR, BMW's engine-drag torque control, became standard, with four Engine Brake settings matched to the Rain, Road, Dynamic and Dynamic Pro modes. The bike also gained the dual-flow LED headlight, a short license-plate holder, a USB-C socket under the seat and Intelligent Emergency Call. Rider Magazine Its DTC traction control picked up the revisions BMW made for the M 1000 R, and the headlight comes from the RR models. BMW's global release
Model year 2027 is a light touch. BMW Motorrad USA lists the S 1000 R at $15,475 plus destination, $90 more than before. The Premium Package rises to $2,780 and adds a USB port, GPS prep and a passenger kit. BMW Motorrad USA's 2027 update
The electronics, decoded
Standard US equipment includes ABS Pro with Race ABS, DTC, riding modes, MSR, Hill Start Control Pro, a steering stabilizer and an anti-hopping clutch. BMW says ABS Pro can stop the wheels locking under hard braking while the bike is leaned over. BMW Motorrad USA That kind of lean-aware help depends on the bike measuring its own attitude, which our guide to what your bike's IMU actually does explains.
In the US, the Premium Package is where the good stuff lives. It bundles Dynamic Damping Control semi-active suspension, Shift Assistant Pro, Riding Modes Pro, an engine spoiler, keyless ride, cruise control, heated grips and tire-pressure monitoring. BMW Motorrad USA BMW's release for South Africa lists the optimized Shift Assistant Pro as standard, so check the spec sheet for your market. BMW South Africa
What the M Package adds
The M Package is the track-day option. In the US it brings an M Sport seat, M fuel filler cap, M lightweight battery, sport silencer, M Endurance chain, the M GPS Laptrigger lap timer and M Forged wheels. BMW Motorrad USA It comes with the Light White and M Motorsport paint, BMW's global release which BMW USA lists at $3,295 for 2027. BMW Motorrad USA's 2027 update BMW quotes no extra power for it. Think of it as lighter wheels and better track hardware, not a tune.
S 1000 R or M 1000 R?
The M 1000 R takes the same idea to the circuit. BMW USA lists the 2027 bike at $22,695 plus destination, rated at 205 hp and 83 lb-ft, with forged wheels, Dynamic Damping Control, M brakes and M winglets as standard. For 2027 its M Competition Package is gone, replaced by an M Track Package with carbon wheels at $5,895 and an M Track Package II with forged wheels at $5,695. BMW Motorrad USA's 2027 update Visordown
BMW's 2025 figures credit those winglets with 38.4 lb of downforce at 174 mph, which is also the M R's quoted top speed. Both bikes weigh 438.7 lb ready to ride in BMW's US tables. BMW Motorrad USA
So the $7,220 gap between the base bikes buys 35 hp, a higher-revving top end, standard semi-active suspension, winglets and M brakes, all on a bike that weighs the same. If your riding is mostly roads with the odd track day, an S 1000 R with the Premium Package covers most of that ground. If you spend real time at the circuit, the M R's top end and standard hardware start to pay for themselves.
Who it suits
The S 1000 R is for experienced riders who want a superbike engine without a superbike's riding position. It is not a learner bike. With 170 hp in a 438.7 lb package, it punishes mistakes for the same reasons a 600 supersport is a bad first bike. For a skilled road rider it makes a strong first track-day bike, especially with our track day prep guide in hand.
