The 911 GT3 has existed since 1999, and Porsche marked its 25th anniversary with the 2025 model year. Porsche's 2025 GT3 release In the 992 generation, the GT3 and the GT3 RS both use a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six and a double-wishbone front axle, but they answer different questions. The GT3 asks how much racing hardware a road car can carry. The RS asks how much road car a track car needs to keep.

The GT3: racing hardware, road-car choices

When the 992 GT3 arrived in 2021, Porsche said its double-wishbone front axle and swan-neck rear wing came from the 911 RSR race car and that its engine was based on the drivetrain of the 911 GT3 R. It made 510 PS, was offered with a six-speed manual as well as PDK, and weighed 1,418 kg with the manual and 1,435 kg with PDK. Development driver Lars Kern lapped the full Nordschleife in 6:59.927, more than 17 seconds quicker than the previous GT3. Porsche's 2021 GT3 premiere

The 2025 update kept the formula and sharpened it. Porsche rates the U.S. car at 502 hp and 331 lb-ft with a 9,000 rpm limit, uses the GT3 RS camshaft profile and shortened the final drive by 8 percent. Both the seven-speed PDK and the six-speed GT Sport manual are offered on the winged GT3 and on the GT3 with Touring Package. The Touring trades the fixed wing for an active rear spoiler with a Gurney flap, and from the 2025 model year it can be ordered with rear seats, a first for the GT3. Porsche's 2025 GT3 release

The RS: aerodynamics first

The 992 GT3 RS, revealed in August 2022, starts from a different priority. A single large central radiator sits in the nose, where other 911s carry luggage, replacing the earlier three-radiator layout. Porsche says the concept came from the 911 RSR and 911 GT3 R, and that moving the cooling freed space at the sides for active aerodynamic elements. Porsche's GT3 RS release

Those elements are the point of the car. The RS was the first production Porsche with a drag reduction system, which flattens the wings at the push of a button within a set operating range; in emergency braking at high speed, the wings move to maximum. Porsche quotes 409 kg of downforce at 200 km/h, which it says is twice the figure of the 991.2 GT3 RS and three times that of the GT3 of the day, rising to 860 kg at 285 km/h. In Track mode, rebound and compression damping can be set separately for each axle, and the rear differential is adjusted from rotary controls on the steering wheel. Porsche's GT3 RS release

The rest of the specification follows from that focus. The engine makes 525 PS, mainly through new camshafts, the track is 29 mm wider than the GT3's, and Porsche lists a seven-speed PDK with shorter overall gearing than the GT3's, with no manual mentioned. Porsche's GT3 RS release In U.S. terms that is 518 hp and 1,895 lb of downforce at 177 mph, and Porsche brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister lapped the Nordschleife in 6:49.328, 10.6 seconds quicker than the GT3. What each one asks of you

The RS's advantages come with conditions. Its downforce figures are quoted at speeds that most road driving never reaches. Its cooling layout occupies the space where other 911s carry luggage. It comes with PDK, and the adjustability that makes it effective on a circuit also gives an owner more settings to understand and manage.

The GT3 keeps a manual, a version without the fixed wing and, with the Touring Package, optional rear seats. For a car that will cover more road miles than track sessions, those choices may matter more than the RS's lap-time advantage.

A family that keeps branching

Porsche has kept extending the GT3 idea toward the road. The 911 S/T, built in a run of 1,963 examples for the 911's 60th anniversary, weighed 1,380 kg, and Porsche called it the lightest model of the 992 generation. Porsche's 911 S/T press kit It paired an engine based on the GT3 RS unit with a six-speed manual, and Porsche developed a lightweight clutch and single-mass flywheel for it that save 10.5 kg. The 2027 GT3 S/C goes further toward open-air driving. It is the first GT3 with a fully automatic soft top and the first open-top 911 with a double-wishbone front axle, it comes only with the six-speed GT Sport manual, and Porsche quotes a curb weight of 3,322 lb. Porsche's GT3 S/C release

Choose by the track time you will actually do. If your miles are mostly on public roads with occasional track days, the GT3 and its derivatives deliver the engine and front axle that define the family, along with more choice of gearbox and body. If you will spend real time at speeds where 860 kg of downforce matters, the RS is the car Porsche built for that job.

Figures are Porsche's published data for the cars described. No TUNERS road or track test is claimed.
