Japanese-market only, and the car that established what the Type R badge would mean on a Civic: a hand-ported B16B, a seam-welded and reinforced shell, a helical limited-slip differential and a stripped interior. It reads modest on paper and does not on a back road. It set the template every later Civic Type R has been measured against, including the ones eventually sold in the United States.
