This is where the GT3 name starts. The 996 GT3 was a homologation car for GT-class racing, stripped of sound deadening, rear seats and air conditioning, and fitted with a dry-sump flat-six derived from the Mezger racing engine rather than the standard 996 Carrera unit — a distinction owners still lead with. Years here are the global run: the first version went on sale in 1999 in every market except North America, and American buyers waited for the 2004 facelift. The GT3 outlived the rest of the 996 range, staying in production until 2006.
