Tioga Road

A 45.5-mile paved crossing of the Sierra through Yosemite, from Crane Flat east to Tioga Pass. Sustained climbing past granite domes and high meadows to the highest highway pass in California, with sweeping curves and long exposed sections. Yosemite states the road is typically open from late May or June until sometime in November; crews must clear several feet of snow, downed trees and rockfall through multiple avalanche zones before it opens. Services along the road are limited, with no fuel or drinking water for long stretches.
