Irohazaka is the pair of one-way roads between central Nikko and Lake Chūzenji in Oku-Nikko: the Second Irohazaka carries traffic uphill and the First Irohazaka carries it down. Together they climb about 440 metres in a zigzag from Umagaeshi to the lake, and their 48 sharp bends give the road its name — each corner carries a sign with one character of the iroha poem, the uphill road beginning with the first. The Second Irohazaka is 9.5 km long and the First 6.5 km. The Nikko tourism association publishes congestion information for the road.
