68.7 paved miles of US 212 across the Beartooth Range between Red Lodge, Montana and the northeast entrance of Yellowstone, climbing in stacked switchbacks to the highest elevation highway in the Northern Rockies. Long open-air traverses above treeline, tight hairpins, and steep sustained grades on both approaches. Snow can fall in midsummer at the top. The road is a seasonal route only, plowed open in late spring and gated again in the autumn.
