BMW's mid-cycle update for the G82 M4 went after the things owners see and touch every day: new headlights, laser taillights, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, a curved screen and, for the all-wheel-drive Competition, 20 more horsepower. Production of the updated coupe and convertible began at Dingolfing in March 2024, and the US got them as 2025 models. Here is what changed, and where it leaves the CS and CSL. Twenty more horsepower, xDrive only

The M4 Competition xDrive coupe and convertible rise to 523 hp at 6,250 rpm, with 479 lb-ft held from 2,750 to 5,730 rpm. The rear-drive Competition coupe stays at 503 hp, its torque plateau ending at 5,500 rpm, and the base M4 keeps 473 hp, 406 lb-ft and a six-speed manual. BMW's US 2025 M4 release BMW credits the gain to a change in the engine control system, and its European releases list the xDrive cars at 390 kW, or 530 metric horsepower. BMW quotes 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds for the xDrive coupe, 3.6 for the convertible, 3.8 for the rear-drive Competition and 4.1 for the manual. Top speed is limited to 155 mph, or 180 mph for the coupe with the M Driver's Package. Sharper lights, front and rear

The new headlights use one LED module for low and high beam, with two vertical, arrowhead-shaped LED units as daytime running lights and turn signals. Every M4 gets laser taillights, in which laser diodes light glass-fiber bundles to draw three-dimensional graphics, a technology BMW first showed on the M4 CSL. Smaller details include a gloss-black roundel surround, a silver-edged M badge on Competition models and a new silver M forged wheel, style 825M, offered across the range. Competition models ride on 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels. BMW's US 2025 M4 release An optional adaptive LED system adds a glare-free matrix high beam. The cabin catches up

The M leather steering wheel gains a flat-bottomed rim, a red 12 o'clock marker and two M buttons, with an M Alcantara version on the options list. The optional M Carbon bucket seats weigh about 9.6 kg, roughly 21 pounds, less than the standard sport seats. BMW's international M4 release The dashboard switches to the BMW Curved Display, pairing a 12.3-inch driver screen with a 14.9-inch control display running Operating System 8.5. Climate settings move into a touch menu or voice control, which BMW says cuts the number of buttons. BMW's US 2025 M4 release

Where the CS fits

BMW benchmarks the 2025 M4 CS against the Competition xDrive coupe. Boost rises to 30.5 psi for 543 hp, and BMW claims a 77-pound saving, to 3,902 pounds, from carbon fiber for the roof, hood, front splitter, rear diffuser and spoiler, plus M Carbon bucket seats and a titanium rear silencer. The CS gets its own kinematics, camber, dampers, springs and anti-roll bars, and headlight icons that glow yellow. BMW recorded a 7:21.99 Nordschleife lap, priced the car at $123,500 plus $1,175 destination, and placed it midway between the Competition xDrive and the CSL. BMW's M4 CS release

On paper, then, the CS adds 20 hp, sheds 77 pounds and costs $35,200 more at base price. In February 2025 BMW also announced the M4 CS Edition VR46, two designs of 46 cars each, to mark Valentino Rossi's birthday. BMW's VR46 edition release

The CSL plays a different game

The 2023 M4 CSL also made 543 hp, but sent it to the rear wheels only and deleted the rear seats. At 3,640 pounds it was 240 pounds lighter than the M4 Competition of its day. Production was limited to 1,000 cars at $139,900 plus $995, and BMW called its 7:20.2 Nordschleife lap the fastest ever for a series-production BMW. BMW's M4 CSL release

By our arithmetic, the Competition xDrive carries 7.6 pounds per horsepower, the CS 7.2 and the CSL 6.7. Our CS and CSL guide lays out the whole family.

What changes in 2026

From July 2026 production, every M3 and M4 variant gets BMW's M Ignite pre-chamber ignition. A small chamber in the cylinder head, with its own spark plug and coil, fires first at higher revs and loads, sending flames into the main chamber at roughly the speed of sound. BMW says that counters knock, lowers exhaust temperatures and cuts fuel use under high load, especially on track, and helps the engine meet Euro 7 rules that take effect in November 2026. A higher compression ratio and variable-turbine-geometry turbochargers come with it, and power outputs stay the same. BMW's M Ignite release Planning a tune? Read our S58 primer first.

A "100 Jahre Nürburgring" edition of the M4 Coupé, orderable from September 2026, adds Nürburgring Green or Black Sapphire paint, a striped carbon roof, green-accented wheels and Nordschleife headrest embroidery. The release does not list markets or prices. BMW's Nürburgring edition release

The pick

Our take: the update makes the Competition xDrive the M4 to shop first. It gets the new lights and cabin, and 523 hp sits only 20 short of the CS and CSL. The CS earns its premium as a complete factory package of power, chassis tuning and carbon; the CSL remains the rear-drive, two-seat outlier. Building one of your own?
