The 80 series is where the Land Cruiser stopped being purely a work vehicle without losing the running gear that made it credible. North American and European cars all got a full-time four-wheel drive system. It was replaced in January 1998 by the 100 series, whose independent front suspension is exactly why 80s stayed desirable — they are the last solid-axle Land Cruiser wagon, and the overlanding world has picked them clean. US buyers know it as the FZJ80, sold there through 1997.
