70 miles of the original 1910s highway east of Portland, engineered with masonry guardrails, gentle grades and looping curves designed for early automobiles. Narrow lanes, tight radii and low speeds are the point; the road threads a chain of waterfalls including Multnomah Falls and climbs to overlooks above the Columbia Gorge. Wet moss, fog and heavy visitor traffic are the main hazards, and some segments are open only to foot and bicycle traffic.
