Yamaha stacked the gearbox shafts to shorten the engine, which let them pull the wheelbase in and move the motor forward — the packaging trick that made the first R1 feel like a 600 with a litre engine behind it. A 177 kg dry weight reset what the class was expected to weigh. The 1998-99 4XV is the one collectors want unmolested, with the red-and-white first-year colour carrying a premium over the blue.
