81.5 paved miles of CA-190 through Death Valley National Park, dipping below sea level and crossing sculpted hills, alluvial fans and shifting dunes. Long straight runs alternate with graded climbs over the passes at either end. This is the hottest place in North America; summer surface temperatures routinely destroy tires and overheat cooling systems, and the park warns to carry extra water. Fuel stops are far apart and there is little cell coverage.
